Winter Olympics go green

Vancouver will stage the greenest Winter Olympics ever, Canadian Tourism Commission chief Michele McKenzie announced at World Travel Market in London. There will be two Olympic villages built for the 2010 Games, one in Vancouver and the other in the Cheakamus Valley at Whistler. The Vancouver village will be fitted with solar panels and rainwater harvested to irrigate green roofs and gardens. Heat exchange systems will keep the 2,100 athletes and officials toasty when they are not on the slopes. The Whistler village is being built on a former landfill site and 90 per cent of the energy needed for heating and showers will be met by capturing waste heat from a nearby waste water treatment plant. www.vancouver2010.com
