Zimbabwe reserve wins conservation award

Singita Pamushana in Zimbabwe has won the conservation section in the global Tourism for Tomorrow awards.

The lodge helps protect more than 120,000 acres of wilderness and degraded wildlife habitat in the southern corner of Zimbabwe.

As well as conserving iconic wildlife, the lodge feeds 25,000 children every day and provides safe drinking water to thousands more villagers.

Speaking at the awards, Singita Director Mark Witney said the single biggest issue within the reserve was a resurgence of rhino poaching.

He said the world could help conservation efforts in southern Africa by stamping out demand for rhino horn - particularly from buyers in Asia.

He added that visitors were essential if this lodge and others like it in troubled Zimbabwe were to continue to look after endangered animal species.

The Tourism for Tomorrow awards were announced at the World Travel and Tourism Council's Summit in Las Vegas this week.
