Lionfish in the fryer at Bluefields Bay
The lionfish may be the greatest threat to marine life in the Caribbean but it does have one natural predator – man. The Pacific invader has poisonous spines yet is safe to eat provided it is carefully prepared. This patois film by greentravelguides.tv is being used by Jamaica's Bluefields Bay fishermen's cooperative to explain the issues to their local community.
Lionfish are having a devastating impact on fish stocks in the region and undermining conservation efforts within Bluefields' marine sanctuary. Happily, lionfish is also tasty and this film shows people living around the Caribbean how lionfish can be safely descaled and the spines removed.
greentravelguides.tv was at Bluefields to make an English language film about the creation of the largest marine sanctuary in Jamaica. The film has been commissioned by The Travel Foundationand supported by Virgin Holidaysand will be screened later this year.
This short patois video will help get the message about lionfish across to local communities.
