Harapan Rainforest, Sumatra
About
The lowland rainforests of Sumatra are home to some of the rarest animals in the world – from tigers and gibbons to sunbears and hornbills.
Until just a few decades ago, these rainforests stretched across most of the island but today have been reduced to isolated pockets under constant threat from logging and clearance for oil palm.
That's why the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, Bird Life International and Burung Indonesia have begun a project to restore Harapan rainforest. It's the first attempt in Indonesia to replant a rainforest and protect the wildlife while the trees recover.
