Heron & Wilson Islands
About this holiday
Heron and neighbouring Wilson islands fall within the Capricorn National Park along Queensland's mighty Barrier Reef.
They are home to a rich variety of plants and animals. Some species are unique to these coral reef islands, such as the strange Pisonia tree used for nesting by Noddy Terns that later in the season produces a sap to capture stragglers!
Tourism is carefully managed on these national park islands. Seabird nesting grounds in the interior of Wilson are closed year-round.
How you can help
- Only walk on the reef with one of the naturalists who’ll show you how to tread carefully around the fragile corals and small animals
- Dive responsibly
- Spend time in the Heron visitor centre to learn about the flora and fauna
- Never use a torch near beached turtles – you are liable to disrupt nesting animals
- Never collect plant or animal souvenirs
- Keep well clear of seabird nesting areas during breeding seasons
