Mount Huangshan, China
About
Nature conservation and biodiversity are now key priorities for China's Mount Huangshan scenic reserve in south Anhui province.
The iconic reserve in eastern China is already protected as a UN World Heritage Site and a familiar image in classical Chinese scroll paintings.
Now efforts are being made to protect the unique natural environment, says director Jiwei Xu.
Mount Huangshan is home to more than half of China's fern families and the endemic Huangshan pine. The tree is unique in that it puts down roots among rocks rather than in soil.
The reserve also contains a third of the country's native byrophyte plants – non vaascular land plants such as mosses.
