Red Squirrels of the Highlands

Seen a red squirrel on a holiday in Scotland? Then put it on the map and help protect one of Britain's most endearing but endangered native mammals.

The Highlands of Scotland is one of the last strongholds of Britain's red squirrels. They're under threat from habitat loss, traffic but most of all from the bigger and invasive North American grey squirrel.

A three year project called Red Squirrels of the Highlands is helping to save these likeable tree-huggers by encouraging people to report their whereabouts.

The project's new website not only maps populations but also runs discussion forums and conservation projects. They'll also be creating red squirrel trails in the region so you have a better chance of spotting Squirrel Nutkin and his relatives in the wild.
