Lion fish in the Cayman Islands
About
The invasion of the Lionfish has been catastrophic for the health of the coral reefs in the Caribbean. They prey on 56 species, singling out juvenile and small fish and threatening several coral species with extinction.
Studies indicate that the arrival of just one lionfish on a reef leads to a 79 per cent drop in the number of young fish within just five weeks. Such is the concern about the threat to biodiversity that conservation authorities in the Cayman Islands enlist specially-trained divers to catch Lionfish.
The Caribbean Marine Institute on Little Cayman has launched a Dive with a Researcher programme whereby visiting divers assist scientists in a Lionfish monitoring project.
